All decomposed and spongy earth along with loose boulders and disintegrated portions of the rock above caves 15 to 17 was removed for determining the source of leakage and filling up the cracks. In caves 6, 14 and 15 the missing door-jambs of cells and pillars were repaired in reinforced concrete to match the adjacent rock-surface. The vertically-cracked pillars in cave 23 were secured with flat iron bands embedded in cement. This was affected by the scooping out of the weathered rock along the entire length of the ceiling of the back corridor of the cave and the insertion of an asbestos drain suitably anchored by means of steel bars and concealed below by concrete matching the rock-surface. The work was executed by the State Public Works Department. Leakage from the roof in the verandah of Cave 16 was counteracted by grouting the crack from top and sealing it from below. Plaster was also applied on the weathered surface of the pillars of the upper story. The leaking front cistern was plastered from inside. |
1955 - 56 | Ellora Caves | Ellora | Aurangabad | Most of the damage to the group of Buddhist caves was caused by water that flowed down over the front of the caves from the hill behind. A new drain was excavated to divert rainwater from falling over the sculpture face of Cave 10 The surface-drains at the hilltop were extended, so that water flowing over Cave 16 could flow elsewhere. Leakage of water in that cave was stopped by lying concrete on the roof, and water accumulating thereon was suitably diverted. Expanded-metal doors were fitted to Caves 7, 11 and 33. Repairs to the decayed pillars in Caves 3 and 26 were affected by the suitable insertion of flat iron bands to hold the fractured pieces together. The pits and holes in the floors of Caves 3, 4, 5 and 12 were fitted. The disintegrated doorjambs and corner-pillars in Cave 5 were plastered to prevent further decay. The longitudinal cracks along the side-walls of Cave 12 were fitted with concrete. The pathways were improved. In order to stop the erosion of the pathway leading to the bridge, which affords a good view of the waterfall, a retaining wall was constructed along it. The surface-drain over Cave 1 to Cave 4, of a length of about 105 ft. damaged due to the fall of big boulders, was also reconstructed. Accordingly, the group of caves at the southern end, from Caves 1 to 9, has been taken up for thorough repairs. The ceiling of Cave 1, where it joins the north wall, had developed a crack, and, as a precautionary measure against any untoward development, a massive concrete wall, with a surface resembling the rock, was erected as a support. The heavy moldings at the plinth of the lateral galleries of Cave 2, which had badly weathered, were repaired in reinforced cement-concrete and finished to match with the surroundings. Wide crack and joints in the of the caves were filled in to stop further disintegration due to water-action. The divert rain-water coming on the of the caves, drains were cut into the rocky roof, as a result of which leakage of water through the joints of rock has been considerably minimized. The clearance further brought to light in the plinth an excavated cell with three pits, apparently an unfinished scheme, in the floor and a porch in front of it at a lower level. The proposed drain measured nearly 440m and was aimed to trap the rain water at a higher level and divert away from the main scarp in which the caves are located. The layout of the drain was made as per the path suggested by the GSI and design provided by Central Water and Power Research Station (CWPRS), Pune. The sufficient earth and rock excavation was carried out to provide a proper base to lay the cement concrete base. After completion of laying the cement concrete for the foundation bed, the work of construction of UCR stone masonry wall on either side of the drain, and fixing of Shahabad stones to the side inner wall surface is completed. Repairing and filling of cavities on the top of Caves 2 to 6 at Ajanta caves :- The basaltic rock formation at Ajanta has several voids and overhangs at many locations, some of which are directly above the caves. One such long and continuous void is noticed at the top of Caves 1-6. It has been observed in the past that these cavities and the debris filled in it are very good water retaining sources which gradually let out the moisture and water thereby affecting the caves. The seepage noticed in the ceiling of rear aisle of Cave 1 is also due to these voids. Hence it was recommended that on a trial basis, a portion of the cavity will be filled up and provided with proper drainage for water. After successful trial work above the cave 1 in the previous year (2006-07) The work of filling the cavities in UCR masonry set with cement mortar and plastering the exterior surface including finishing as rock texture above cave 2-6 was taken up and the work is in progress. In order to divert the attention of the tourists from the caves and also to enable a less tedious approach to the caves as the present ascend is a steep one, an alternate pathway was suggested along the right bank of River Waghora connecting the foothill of the caves to Cave 8 directly. It is with this objective, two pedestrian footbridges were constructed in the Phase I of project funded by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Hence, in order to facilitate the visitor circulation to the caves, the stone paved pathway was construction on the right bank of River Waghora connecting the two pedestrian footbridges already in existence |
